Sefer Hamidos - Book of Traits

Book of attributes, lists the attributes of reality as well as their effects and how they can be manipulated. Written by Rebbe Nachman of Breslev, Sefer Hamedos is also sometimes referred to as the Book of Aleph Bet and Sefer Hanhagos Yesharos.

According to the Kabbalah there is a spiritual reality that controls the world. There is a system of cause and effect, where one action or element leads to another. Sefer Hamidos is a list of these traits and attributes and how they can be used to gain progress in life and service of Hashem.

Sefer Hamidos is listed in Alphabetical order and is composed of two parts.

Part one was written by Rebbe Nachman in his youth. He  complied a list of traits and their interactions from the various holy texts that he was studying. He used this information to advance to high spiritual levels and once said that Sefer Hamidos is what made him a Jew. Rebbe Nachman begin dictating the first part of Sefer Hamidos to Rebbe Nason soon after his arrival in the city of Breslov. It was then that Rebbe Nachman first revealed the existence of Sefer Hamidos which was hidden until that point. Rebbe Nason would sit in front of Rebbe Nachman as he read over parts of his personal written manuscript, according to their alphabetical category. Although Rebbe Nachman's personal manuscript contained his sources for the teachings, he did not give them over to Rebbe Nason.

The second part was written later on in his life. Rebbe Nachman said that the second part was much deeper then then the first. Unlike the first part of Sefer Hamidos this was not arranged in alphabetical order. Rebbe Nachman gave over an unorganized list of teachings to some of his students and later to Rebbe Nason for them to organize by category. It is for this reason that many of the teachings in part two, are repeated in multiple categories.

Rebbe Nachman did not reveal a large portion of the original Sefer Hamidos that was written in his personal manuscript. Amongst the omitted material was over two hundred paragraphs on the subject of healing and medicine. Rebbe Nachman stated that if people would have access to this information they would never have to go to doctors.

Sefer Hamidos is also called Sefer HaAlef Bet since it lists the various traits in Alphabetical order. It is also sometimes referred to as Sefer Hanhagos Yesharos since it gives straight guidance extracted from many holy texts.
